To be a successful blogger you need to learn how to focus your time and money on ONLY the blogging tasks and resources that pay off.
We are constantly bombarded with advice about what we SHOULD be doing that we lose sight of what we NEED to do.
Enter a little concept called: Blogging ROI.
What is Blogging ROI?
I was first introduced to the concept of Blogging ROI during a free webinar series that was part of the 2017 Genius Blogger’s Toolkit.
In the business world, ROI stands for “return on investment”.
To have a successful ROI you need to get more out of a project than what you put in.
Traditionally, ROI is measured in dollars.
But for solo bloggers – we invest two things:
- our time, and
- our money
To me, my time is more precious than my money.
Every minute that I spend on my blog is time away from my family or possibly even finding a job outside the home.
Stop Wasting Time on Your Blog
I am a little slow on the uptake – so it took me a really long time to figure out this concept of Blogging ROI.
There were so many hours that I spent “chasing my tail” with my blog.
This was time that I could have spent on tasks that made me money.
So, how can you avoid the mistakes that I made?
Stay Clear on Your Blogging Goals
This is my number one piece of advice.
Let me give you a few very simplified examples.
Blogging Goal: Make Money from Advertising
If your goal is to make money blogging through income from advertising – you should focus your efforts on growing your blog traffic.
Big ad networks like AdThrive and Mediavine will only work with you once you hit a set number of monthly pageviews on your blog.
Blogging Goal: Make Money Through Affiliate Marketing
If you want to make money with affiliate marketing, your focus will be on
- selecting the programs that you want to promote,
- creating blog content that highlights the benefits of these products to your readers, and
- being consistent in your message.
Blogging Goal: Establishing Yourself as An Expert in Your Field
If you want to be seen as an expert – your efforts should revolve around showcasing your knowledge.
This is especially true for people that have shops or offline businesses.
Your focus will be on answering questions and providing guidance to your audience.
Blogging Goal: Work With Brands on Sponsored Posts
If you like reviewing products and doing sponsored posts, you may want to focus your efforts on increasing your social media following.
Brands generally want to work with bloggers that have large social audiences and/or that are experts on utilizing the products that the brand carries.
You will also spend your time reaching out and engaging with the brands that you would like to work with.
You Can Have More Than One Blogging Goal
I understand that you probably have many goals as a blogger – but the key to becoming a successful blogger is to focus on just one at a time.
You will avoid the overwhelm and also be able to better measure the Blogging ROI of your efforts.
Learn From Another Successful Blogger
You may have heard of a blogger named Rosemarie Groner of the Busy Budgeter.
She went from making 0 dollars to making tens of thousands of dollars from her blog every month – in under a year.
By itself, that is quite an accomplishment.
But what makes it even more amazing is that she did this by working for only 10 hours per week on her blog.
Knowing how much time I spend on my own blog, this is just jaw-dropping.

UPDATE: This webinar is over – and it was a great one, I must say.
