An entryway or foyer is one of the first things that people see when entering your home. So, it is tempting to decorate the space with a beautiful console table that showcases little knick knacks or seasonal decor.
But, personally, if entryway space is limited, I prefer to have a bench as the sole piece of furniture.
I find that a bench in a small entryway or foyer is the most practical use of the space – especially if you have older guests.
Small Benches to Check Out
There are so many small benches to choose in a variety of styles and price points. Here are few to look into.
Bench Links: 1. Beige Upholstered Bench | 2. Waterfall Woven Bench | 3. Brass Finish Bench | 4. Carved Wood Storage Bench | 5. Slim Upholstered Bench | 6. Upholstered Bench with Drawers | 7. Wicker Storage Bench
And here is a { rustic bench } that I forgot to include in the above list. It is a 30 inch bench that I found on Amazon and the price point is pretty fantastic considering that there is a similar one that is twice as long { here } at Pottery Barn at a much higher price.
Here is a Cute Little Bench
Here is a cute little bench that I chose for one of my clients entryway.
We did not have a lot of space to work with, so we chose a simple, small bench with a cushioned top and an open bottom.
The upholstery (platinum tweed) and wood frame color, ties in nicely with the rest of the decor. It is located directly across from the coat closet and also next to the front door.
It comes in a variety of covering choices and also in two lengths.
Overall I like this bench from Simplihome. It was easy to assemble, has a nicely padded and comfortable top, and it’s simple design will fit in with just about any decor.
And if you are curious about the rug – you can find that one { here }.
Why Add a Bench to Your Foyer?
The primary use of a bench in the foyer is to offer your family or guests a place to sit as they put on or take off their shoes or jackets as they enter or exit your home.
They can use this space to stow their handbags or outerwear during their visit as well.
And if the bench is open underneath, visitors can remove their shoes and tuck them underneath during their stay.
This keeps your foyer neat and free of shoe clutter.
A bench also serves as a convenient spot for you to leave a bag, box, or other items that you need to take with you when you leave your house. This helps to make sure you don’t forget something important on your way out.
The Cons of a Bench in Your Entryway
As with any other surface, the downfall to having a bench in your entryway is that it can become a clutter magnet.
If you have kids – you will be after them to pick up their backpacks or other personal items that they toss on the bench on their way in or out.
But with a little self discipline you can capitalize on the advantages and keep the clutter in check.
Establish some house rules and make sure the bench is empty at the end of each day.
Ideal Spot for a Small Bench
Every house is laid out differently and while the foyer or entryway will be the best place for a small bench in most homes, you need to consider your own circumstances for the best location.
Ideally, you will want a bench near the main entry points to your home and also in close proximity to your coat, hall, or shoe closet.
The goal is to make it easy to simply grab a pair of shoes from the closet and have an available place to sit while you put your shoes on.
This keeps people from traipsing through your house with their dirty shoes on. So, the rest of your home will stay a little cleaner for a little longer.
It’s a super easy solution and not too costly to implement.
Things to Keep In Mind When Choosing a Bench
This rug is placed on top of a tile floor using a standard rug pad similar to { this one }.
Benches are typically a pretty straightforward type of purchase – but there are a few things that you should keep in mind.
Sturdiness
First, make sure the bench you choose is actually suitable for sitting on. I know, that sounds a little crazy – but some items that are marketed as “benches” don’t have a very hight weight capacity, believe it or not.
So, check the weight capacity before you buy to make sure the one you choose is sturdy and safe to sit on.
A few years ago, I reupholstered an antique bench. It was my mothers and I really love it – but even though it is small, it is definitely too delicate to hold up to the heavy use that a bench in the foyer will get.
Measurements
Second, be sure to MEASURE your space and check that the dimensions on the bench that you choose will work in your space.
