If you love french toast this recipe is for you.
It is basic. It is easy. And it packs in a lot of flavor.
I have seen some elaborate french toast recipes around the web and they look delicious.
I see many ideas for baked or overnight french toast, I think – oh, I should try that, but I never do.
For me, simple wins out every time.
This is how to make french toast without too much muss and fuss.
The recipe is perfect for one person but you can easily double or triple it.
I use it to make french toast sticks, too.
Collect Your Ingredients
This french toast recipe calls for the following ingredients.
- 2 large or extra large eggs,
- 2 slices of your favorite bread (I like to use whole wheat),
- cinnamon sugar,
- pure vanilla extract,
- salt, and
- a drizzle of canola oil.
Kitchen Supplies Needed
These are the supplies that I use to make french toast.
- a medium sized stainless steel mixing bowl
- wire whisk
- stainless steel measuring spoons
- my absolute favorite nonstick omelet pan
- nylon spatula
- mini glass bowls for syrup
Step 1 – Beat The Eggs
Crack two eggs in a medium mixing bowl and beat them with a wire whisk.
Remind me not to wear a pink shirt when taking food photography with a stainless steel bowl (yup, that’s my reflection!). 😉
Step 2 – Add in the Spices
Add the cinnamon sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt to the beaten eggs and whisk them in.
Step 3 – Soak the Bread
Pour the beaten egg mixture into a shallow dish.
Soak each piece of bread in the egg mixture for a few seconds on each side.
Two slices of bread should absorb most of the egg mixture.
Step 4 – Preheat Your Skillet
For this french toast recipe I prefer to use my favorite nonstick omelet pan but any 9 inch or larger nonstick skillet will do the job.
Add a drizzle of canola oil to your skillet and preheat it over medium heat for about a minute.
Step 5 – Add the Egg Soaked Bread
Once the skillet is warm add the slices of your egg soaked bread.
Continuously flip the slices of french toast and let both sides get brown and toasty.
Slightly add pressure to the slices of french toast with your spatula as they cook so the heat permeates the entire piece of toast and cooks the egg on the inside as well.
Step 6 – Serve Your French Toast
When both sides are nicely toasted and the french toast is hot throughout, serve with a side of maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar.
I like to make french toast sticks by cutting each slice into 3 equal pieces.
Then I dip the french toast sticks into a mini glass bowl of maple syrup on the side.
Serve This French Toast Recipe Anytime
This french toast recipe is perfect for a lazy brunch or for a quick breakfast as the kids run out the door on busy school days.
One serving contains protein from 2 eggs and 2 slices of bread – which in my opinion is a better choice than a donut or muffin.
